I feel you; I have chronic L5-S1 problems and had a discectomy about 4 years ago. The RS117 has a deck height of 13" while the SS107 is 15.5" and both kayaks have a two level seat. In general with low back problems, when sitting, you want your bottom to be in line with your knees not lower than them. When your bottom is lower than your knees, it places extra stress on your back. At your height it may not be possible to keep your bottom in line with your knees with any kayak. That said, I do well in the RS 117 with the seat in the high position, but I'm 5'11" 175. The seat is very comfortable and it is very easy to stand up in the kayak. I'll sit for awhile and then stand up to stretch out. About the only time I really have some issues is when I'm really trying to cover a lot of water at once. I just go slow and steady and stand to stretch when needed. I may invest in a paddle board paddle as well to paddle while standing, but have not done that yet. This was my first ever kayak and I have been very happy with it. I went with it for the more entry level price in case kayaking long term did not work for me due to my back problems. The kayak has been great and is exactly what I was looking for. In a few years, I do plan to upgrade to the SS 127 as it has the higher deck height and is supposed to be a better seat. That deck height and seat come in the SS 117 as well. If possible, I would try and go to a local shop and take them both for a test spin.
